Flight Instruction

What is Flight Training all about?
Ideal Private Pilot Training consists of one-on-one flight instruction sessions lasting 2-2 1/2 hours. About 1-1 1/2 hours is flying, while the rest is put to use preparing for the specific fight lesson, reviewing any questions from your home study (see below) and review and critique after the flight is complete. Some lessons may be longer, some shorter, depending on the specific lesson. By following our FAA approved flight syllabus, you will be fully aware of what is expected of you for each flight lesson.

We encourage students to schedule at least 2 flight lessons a week, more if they can do it. Higher frequency of flight lessons allows for greater retention of skills and knowledge, thereby reducing costs to the student. However, if once a week, or even once a month is all you can manage, you will succeed in becoming a pilot as well. Jetstream's experienced instructors are dedicated to making sure you do!

Your flight training will be tailored to you and your schedule. There are many variables involved, such as your work schedule and family obligations. Below is a cost breakdown for the minimum Federal Aviation Regulations requirements for the private pilot certificate. Be aware of other flight training organizations advertised flight training costs. There are often costly fuel and insurance charges not advertised in their seemingly lower prices. We at Jetstream believe flight training is expensive enough, without hidden costs.

To be eligible for your private pilot certificate you will have to have the following experience: 35 hours of total flight time, a minimum of 20 hours with an instructor, a minimum of 5 hours of solo flight time, and you will have to pass 3 tests.
The first being the FAA written exam. This is an exam consisting of multiple choice questions that you will take at Jetstream's FAA approved LaserGrade Testing Center. To prepare you for this exam, Jetstream has put together a home study course that we feel helps you not just prepare to pass the test, but truly know the information as well.

There are some who thrive in more of a classroom environment, learning as much from student interaction as they do following the home study course. Periodically throughout the year we offer a formalized ground school to prepare students for the written exam. Contact Jetstream Aviation at (208)345-3730 to check upcoming dates and availability.

The remaining tests, are the oral and practical exams which are combined in what we commonly refer to as a "checkride". After completing the requirements set by the FAA and our approved syllabus. The thought of going up with an evaluator who you don’t know can be nerve racking, but we have some good news. We are now the only flight school in Idaho with examining, which means that you take all your checkrides with one of our lead instructors. Once you pass this last checkride you will be a newly certificated private pilot!

So now that I’m a private pilot what can I do? You can now carry passengers and split the costs equally amongst your passengers. You can use your certificate to help out with charitable organizations. Be reimbursed for operating costs associated with search and rescue services. Demonstrate an aircraft for a prospective buyer, or even tow gliders.

Big Disclaimer
Please note again that these are the minimums! In our experience, these are not realistic prices for students to expect. We post them for your information and comparisons, but for a more realistic cost expectation.
